BMW ESA (Electronic Suspension Adjustment) Explained

BMW ESA is a must for any true riders out there. No more wasting hours of your time messing with suspension adjustment tools or even the constant twisting of the preload dial to get it just right, it’s all there in a single button.

This optional feature basically allows the rider to adapt the chassis of the motorcycle ideally to his riding style, the amount of weight, or even the weather conditions on that day. The button located on the left handlebar gives you the ability to adjust the suspension and damping characteristics of the front and rear suspension.

The damping adjustments (Sport, Normal and Comfort) can be made whilst riding meaning you can change the style immediately when travelling on different surfaces. Whereas the shock preload adjustments have to made whilst stationary. This simple one-click button allows even the less experience riders have the most comfortable ride by taking away all the guess work in their suspension set-up.

This means you’re ready to adapt your suspension no matter what the given riding scenario is. The following BMW bikes currently come with the ESA (Electronic Suspension Adjustment) feature.

Ohlins “DES” Ducati Electronic Suspension Servicing

DES or Ducati Electronic Suspension was developed in conjunction with Ohlins and is usually found on the Ducati Panigale 1199 & Ducati DS1000 Multistrada 1200 (The Ohlins code for these forks is FG8650 FG8603).

Over the years we have seen many customers complaining about a loud “clicking noise” coming from their “brand new” Multistrada forks with no indication as to what is causing the it.

Here at Firefox after close inspection of a set of FG8650 Ohlins forks we have found a fault on the valves, this can be fixed be upgrading part of the valve and can be done along side our rebuild service with only a minimum extra charge.

We advise customer not to try dissembling these particular forks as they are not the run of the mill items.
